Riken nabs supercomputer title

Research institute Riken said June 20 a supercomputer it is developing in Kobe has been ranked the world's fastest in terms of processing speed, the first time since 2004 that a Japanese supercomputer has held the top spot. The supercomputer, nicknamed K, has been in the spotlight ever since Democratic Party of Japan lawmaker Renho threatened to terminate the project in a bid to reduce unnecessary government spending. K draws upon the Japanese word kei for 10 to the 16th power. K's performance goal is 10 petaflops, or 1,000 trillion operations per second. (Kyodo News)
