Ogasawara Islands, Hiraizumi named as Heritage sites

The Ogasawara Islands, a habitat for rare animals and plants in the western Pacific, was named as a World Natural Heritage site June 24 by UNESCO, government officials said. The chain of about 30 islands about 1,000 km south of Tokyo is home to many indigenous species because it has never been connected to a continent.
Meanwhile, the ancient Buddhist temples and landscape of Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, have won approval as a World Cultural Heritage site, government officials said June 25. The registration of Hiraizumi is the first spot in Tohoku to make the World Heritage List. (Kyodo News)
