The government announced Aug. 2 that the national women's soccer team will receive the People's Honor Award for its historic victory in the Women's World Cup final, an achievement that brought a much-needed dose of good cheer to the nation.
The honor, to be conferred at a ceremony Aug. 18, is "for inspiring people in Japan with their dedication and attitude not to give up until the very end and for encouraging people to face great difficulties such as the (March 11) catastrophe," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said.
Meanwhile, the Japan Football Association decided Aug. 3 to reward the team with cash bonuses for winning the competition, with the 21 squad members to receive 6.5 million yen each. (Kyodo News)
