DPJ bends on child allowances

Prime Minister Naoto Kan's ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) agreed Aug. 4 with major opposition parties to pare its signature pledge to provide benefits to each child of junior high school age or younger regardless of family income. Starting from fiscal 2012, any family whose head of household receives annual pretax income of around 9.6 million yen or more will be excluded from receiving benefits, lawmakers said. (Kyodo News)
