Koji Murofushi outshined the competition en route to winning his first title in the men's hammer throw at the IAAF World Athletics Championships on Aug. 29.
Murofushi got off to a flying start with a season-best throw of 79.72 meters to top the standings and got even better from there.
He banged out 81.24 on his third and fifth attempts and 80.83 on his sixth and final try. Krisztian Pars of Hungary took silver with 81.18 while the bronze went to Primoz Kozmus of Slovenia with 79.39.
"I am delighted to have won my first world title and my season's best," Murofushi told reporters. "It only happened because we have a team supporting us. I now look forward to (the 2012 Summer Olympics in) London."
Due to injuries, Murofushi missed the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. But he won a silver medal in 2001 and a bronze in 2003.(AP, Kyodo News)
