Summer electricity restrictions lifted

The national power-saving edict issued July 1 to address electricity shortages triggered by the Fukushima nuclear crisis was lifted on the night of Sept. 9.

Under the mandatory power-saving drive, the first of its kind in 37 years, large-lot users served by Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Tohoku Electric Power Co. were required to reduce electricity consumption by 15 percent from the previous year during peak weekday hours.

Citizens nationwide and large-lot users in other areas were also asked to voluntarily save electricity.

Several companies opted to move their business hours forward by an hour. The auto industry designated Thursdays and Fridays as off days and ran their plants on weekends instead to reduce overall electricity usage during weekdays. Some railway operators cut services.

Such power-saving efforts, together with a relatively mild summer, led to a drop of more than 15 percent in power consumption in the two utilities' areas. (Kyodo News)
