Married pairs have fewer than 2 kids

The average number of children a married couple have in their lifetime fell below two for the first time in 2010 to 1.96, a government survey showed Oct. 21. The finding by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research is based on responses by men and women who married in the first half of the 1990s and have nearly finished with childbearing. The average number of a couple's offspring has been declining gradually over the years. (Kyodo News)
