Furukawa ends 5 1/2-month ISS stay

A Soyuz space capsule carrying three astronauts, including Satoshi Furukawa from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, returned to Earth on Nov. 22, descending onto a plain in Kazakhstan by parachute after the three completed a 5 1/2-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Furukawa, 47, spent 167 days and six hours aboard the ISS, setting a record for the longest stay on the station by a Japanese astronaut in a single voyage, surpassing 163 days by Soichi Noguchi and 137 days by Koichi Wakata.

Furukawa, along with NASA astronaut Mike Fossum and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov, looked well and were smiling when they emerged from the Soyuz capsule.

A former surgeon at University of Tokyo Hospital, Furukawa conducted a string of medical experiments, including setting up a remote diagnosis system to enable ground control staff to monitor astronauts' physical conditions. (Kyodo News, AP)
