MSDF officers acquitted over collision

Two Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) officers were acquitted May 11 at the Yokohama District Court over a predawn collision in 2008 between an MSDF destroyer and a small fishing vessel off the coast of Chiba Prefecture that killed two fishermen. Accepting the officers' claim that a right turn made by the 7.3-ton fishing vessel Seitoku Maru caused the risk of a collision, presiding Judge Hiroshi Akiyama determined that it was not the responsibility of the 7,750-ton Aegis destroyer Atago to take avoidance action.
