77 dead in Norway massacre, Oslo blast
A gunman killed 69 people July 22 in a horrific killing spree on Norway's Utoya Island, where a youth camp was in session. Authorities said he dressed as a police officer and beckoned victims closer before shooting them one by one. The tragedy unfolded hours after a massive explosion in Oslo that ripped through a high-rise building housing the prime minister's office, killing eight people.
The 32-year-old Norwegian suspect, Anders Behring Breivik, said he was motivated by a desire to bring about a revolution in Norwegian society. A manifesto that he is believed to have written ranted against Muslim immigration to Europe and vowed revenge on "indigenous Europeans" whom he accused of betraying their heritage. (AP)
