Turkish quake death toll rises to 37

Authorities say at least 37 people, including a Japanese aid worker, were killed in the second earthquake to hit eastern Turkey in about two weeks.

Turkey's disaster management authority said Nov. 12 that 30 people were pulled out alive from the rubble of two hotels that collapsed when the 5.7-magnitude quake hit the eastern city of Van on Nov. 9.

Rescue workers pulled out the bodies of the reporters from the Dogan news agency Nov. 12. The aid worker, Japanese doctor Atsushi Miyazaki, who came to Turkey to help victims of the magnitude-7.2 temblor that killed 604 people Oct. 23, was rescued alive but died in a hospital Nov. 10.

Rescuers pulled out 13 bodies from the wreckage of the Bayram Hotel as well as the low-budget Aslan Hotel on Nov. 11. "We are not able to hear any voices," said disaster management official Askit Dayi. "But still we are removing layers of concrete in a way as if there are survivors." (AP)
