Indian girls shed 'unwanted' names

More than 200 Indian girls whose names mean "unwanted" in Hindi have chosen new names for a fresh start in life. A central Indian district held a renaming ceremony Oct. 22 that it hopes will help fight widespread gender discrimination that gives India a skewed gender ratio, with far more boys than girls. The 285 girls lined up to receive certificates with their new names from officials in Maharashtra state. In shedding names like "Nakusa" or "Nakushi," which mean "unwanted," some girls chose to name themselves after Bollywood stars. (AP)
