Nishikori's strong run ends in Australian Open q'finals

Kei Nishikori had his career-best Grand Slam run ended by fourth-seeded Andy Murray in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on Jan. 25.

The Briton proved again he is a class above the 22-year-old rising Japanese star, winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 to face defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

The 24th-seeded Nishikori upset sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round Jan. 23 to become the first Japanese man to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event since Shuzo Matsuoka did so at Wimbledon in 1995.

Nishikori's previous career-best Grand Slam result was the round of 16 at the U.S. Open in 2008. (Kyodo News)
