Yamaguchi-gumi on U.S. sanctions list

The United States on Feb. 23 placed the Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest yakuza organization in Japan, and its two leaders on a list of groups subject to economic sanctions for involvement in weapons-trafficking, money-laundering and other crimes, the Treasury Department said. U.S. authorities will freeze the underworld syndicate's assets and those of its leader, Kenichi Shinoda, aka Shinobu Tsukasa, and his No. 2 man, Kiyoshi Takayama. (Kyodo News)
