Smartphones, tablets to add 7 trillion yen

Smartphones and tablet computers will boost the economy by an estimated 7.2 trillion yen a year, including spillover effects when they become more prevalent, according to a government white paper released July 17. Based on the assumption that about 60 percent of the roughly 40 million mobile phone users in 2011 in Japan had switched to smartphones, the 2012 white paper on information and communications puts the direct effect at 3.657 trillion yen, including phone charges of 1.218 trillion yen, e-commerce worth 1.003 trillion yen and handset purchase revenues of 553.6 billion yen.
