Terminal care suspended 17 times: JAAM

Terminal care in emergency rooms raises ethical problems because patients are often unable to express how they want to be treated, but for the first time, the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine (JAAM) has revealed there have been 17 cases over the past two years in which doctors suspended or withheld critical care for patients near death or deemed terminal. Over a two-year period ending in March, emergency care was suspended or withheld 17 times according to guidelines formulated by the association in 2007. (Kyodo News)
