Supermarket chain reopens in China

Retailer Heiwado Co. on Oct. 27 reopened two of its stores in China's Hunan Province that were damaged during anti-Japanese demonstrations in September amid the Senkaku Islands row. Heiwado was forced to close the two supermarkets, located in the city of Changsha, and a third in Zhuzhou in mid-September after rampaging protesters attacked the facilities, causing yen 3.5 billion worth of damage. It marks one of the first moves by Japanese retailers to reopen on a full-scale basis stores in China damaged by vandalism and looting after Japan nationalized three of the Senkaku islets, which are claimed by Beijing, on Sept. 11.
