Russian police freed more than 27 children held for years in underground isolation by a Muslim sect in the eastern republic of Tartarstan, officials said. Sixty members of the sect, followers of a self-proclaimed prophet, had lived for more than a decade in a bunker below a mosque. Children, including some born in the bunker, also lived in the cold cells. The children, aged 1 to 17, had never left the property, attended school or been seen by a doctor, officials said Aug. 8. Their parents were charged with child abuse. (AP)
