Several Japanese nationals working at a gas facility in southeastern Algeria have apparently been seized by Islamist militants, Japanese engineering company JGC Corp. said Jan. 16.
Up to 41 foreigners including Norwegians were kidnapped in a dawn raid in retaliation for France's intervention in Mali, south of Algeria, Reuters said. Reuters said the raiders killed three people including a Briton and a French national.
Algerian forces had surrounded the kidnappers, and negotiations for the release of those held were ongoing, the AP reported, adding that several people were reportedly wounded in the attack by the militants.
An al-Qaida-linked group said the raid had been carried out because of Algeria's decision to allow France to use its airspace for attacks against Islamists in Mali, Reuters said. (Kyodo News)
