Japan loses to Puerto Rico at WBC semifinal
|
|
Alex Rios hit a two-run homer, and Mike Aviles singled twice and drove in a run as Puerto Rico eliminated two-time reigning World Baseball Classic champion Japan with a 3-1 victory March 17 to reach the final.
At the final March 19, the Dominican Republic, who beat the Netherlands in the other semifinal, defeated Puerto Rico 3-0, claiming the title for the first time.
Unlike the previous WBC winners, this Japan team was devoid of major leaguers and couldn't pull off a three-peat.
Hirokazu Ibata drove in the team's lone run with an eighth-inning single against Randy Fontanez, but Japan missed a chance with a costly baserunning blunder -- a botched double-steal attempt. (AP)
