Professor Peter Hassall of Zayed University in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

I am honored to adjudicate such a wealth of talent. In the Middle & High School section, the highly emotive ESS, entitled A small box catches my heart-strings. Other memorable ESSs capturing the spirit of Japan include: Kokyo, the Imperial Palace, Earthquake (星野 あかね、熊本県), Japan and The color. There is contrast between the somewhat reserved, The educational system (知念佐枝、沖縄県), What I like about my country (is vending machines) (斎藤薫、千葉県), and the enormous vitality of Happy happy year (SHIINA、京都府). Amongst the strongest writing in the Adults category are My Country — The Philippines, the highly imaginative I Do Not Like My Country, and the international anthem My Village: The World (Athari、UAE). Other well-written and thought-provoking ESSs include the fascinating, I like local dialects best(Chips、愛知県), the heartfelt Loving the UAE(Nour、UAE) and the memorable and funny, The Hospitality. Cherry blossoms and Mt. Fuji(稲葉昌子、東京都), The precious element(Hessa Obaid、UAE) and Clean water (小島裕子、埼玉県) were also beautifully written.

Professor emeritus Nobuyuki Honna

My Country — The Philippines I Do Not Like My Country はタイトルとコンテンツの違いが面白く、The Hospitality も味がある。他には Cherry blossoms and Mt. Fuji(稲葉昌子、東京都)、My Village: The World(Athari、UAE)などが印象的である。

The Color

The best thing I like about Japan is the seasons. In spring we have pink cherry blossoms, in summer we have green leaves, in autumn we have the red and orange maples, and at last in winter we have the white snow. The different colors of each season is beautiful.

A small box

A small box with full of happiness.
Rice, an omelet, meatballs and vegetables.
All in this magical box.
It makes my happiness and smile.
It gives me dream and energy.
The Japanese traditional magical box which is full of warm love.
"It was delicious, mom. Thanks a lot every day."

Others mentioned

Kokyo, the Imperial Palace
Have you ever looked at Tokyo from above? I have. And, frankly put, it doesn't shine with excitement or adventure. But. Right in the middle. There's a green. And that's why I like Japan. Because right in the core, there's us. Our history, our culture, our personality, everything. There's us.

(Moe Ikeuchi, middle school)

EARTHQUAKE
we had a great earthquake.
so a lot of people were injured and despaired.
but, they didn't forgot ther belief "TASUKEAI".
some students administered to the elderly and children.
some volunteers made soup for suffers.
I think this is the importhant mind.
we have that mind.this is my country.

Kumamoto Prefecture, middle school)

The educational system
There are a lot of things I can be proud of my country but especially I am proud of the Japanese educational system. This system enables us to get equal educational standard so that Japanese literacy is 100 percent. Because of it japan is able to preserve its public order.

Okinawa Prefecture, high school)

In Japan,we can enjoy exciting events from all over the world!!

(SHIINA, middle school)

What I like about my country
What I like about my country is vending machines. If you come to Japan you will see them in many places. There are even digital ones which you can buy by touching the display. Even in one vending machine, there are many Japanese companies and high technology related to it.

Chiba Prefecture, high school)

cherry blossom
The school year begins in September in America. This is February in Brazil.
My foreign friends sometimes ask me why we start in April.
I am not sure but it should be because we want to take a picture of our children's big smiles with cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Miyagi Prefecture, high school)

Stereotype and reality
Japan may be small compared to other countries,
With images of trouble with some neighbors.
It might seem this small island is so fussy,
But in reality not all are like that.
I like how people are so organized,
How they line up in neat rows for some good food.

(Falogonia, Tokyo, middle school)

Honest
Japan is a peaceful country.
For example, a few days ago. I lost my wallet in Shibuya at night. I thought it was terrible. But a few days later. It was reported to the police station. Everything was fully intact. I did not know how to thank the honest person.

I Do Not Like My Country

How can I possibly like a country with all of these wonderful people, gorgeous locations, delicious foods, and beautiful sounds? To say that I like it would go against everything I feel for this country. I do not like this country. I love this country with all of my heart.

(Newbasick, Hyogo Prefecture)

ST賞 Third Place

The Hospitality

The 4 Great Things About Japan
The toilet seat is warm.
The bus comes on time.
Even if they don't speak English, they will do their best to help you.
If you lost your wallet, go to the lost and found. It will be there.
What more can I say?

(Minori Ishida, Hyogo Prefecture)

Others mentioned

Cherry blossoms and Mt. Fuji
Cherry blossoms and Mt. Fuji are what I like best about Japan. Cherry blossoms in full bloom are so fascinating a scenery after strict winter. Looking at Mt. Fuji always makes me feel sublime. With these two splendid natural beauties I feel very happy that I was born in Japan.

Tokyo)

My Village: The World
Every face of every race.
Every tongue that's ever been sung.
Every colour of sister and brother.
Every religion and worldly vision.
Coming together from far and wide.
Standing together side by side.
Marching forward, hand in hand.
Paving the way in a brand new land.
One world. One village.

(Athari, UAE)

I like local dialects best
What I like most about Japan is its diversity in dialects. When young, I traveled around the country and met local people. I found each region had its unique accent, which sounded very dear to me. I believe we should preserve such varieties of local dialects as a national heritage.

(Chips, Aichi Prefecture)

Loving the UAE
It's a country with much to offer. From the delicious morning Karak to Steak dinners. The summer might be steaming hot but that makes us look forward to the winter. There is respect between citizens and mutual love to our leaders and father Sheik Zayed (May he rest in peace).

(Chips, Aichi Prefecture)

The precious element
If you asked me about what I like in my country, fifty words are not enough to describe the charming beauty of the UAE. However, safety is the most element that I like because without it you will not be able to feel the joy of every moment you live.

( Hessa Obaid, UAE)

Clean water
I'm proud of the taste and pureness of water in Japan.
You can drink delicious and clean water everywhere and any time in Japan. In peopled areas you can drink purified tap water and in mountain areas there are many pure springs that you can enjoy them as drinking water.

Saitama)
