、陳総統が英語を台湾の第二公用語とする構想を発表。バイリンガル幼稚園（※）が出来たり
、英語を話すフィリピン人家政婦を雇ったりして、台湾の人々の英語熱は高まっています。
今週は、台北に住むユイチュンちゃんに登場してもらいます。
This month we're going to be taking a look at Taiwan. In Taiwan, English has been taught to elementary school students since 2001.
This was followed by an initiative by President Ching in 2002 to make English the country's official second language.
As a result the number of kindergartens that teach English has grown, and it's a well-known fact that many families hire maids
from the Philippines to help their children learn English.
Now, let's meet Yuicyun, who lives in Taipei.

お名前は？ お名前にはどんな意味があるの？
My name is Yuicyun. It means "short grass" in Chinese. It grows even in places where the wind is strong.
ユイチュン。意味は、中国語で「小さい草」だよ。風が強くても、小さい草はよく成長生するんだって。
筆者コメント：香港同様、台湾の人たちもイングリッシュネームを持っています。
ユイチュンちゃんのイングリッシュネームはCherです。
(Like people from Hong Kong, the Taiwanese have English names. Yuicyun's English name is Cher.)
