‘Japan can quit nuclear': ex-U.S. regulator

The ongoing crisis at the Fu-kushima No. 1 plant is a sign that the world needs to seriously rethink nuclear safety, the former chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Sept. 24 in Tokyo.

At the Foreign Correspondents' Club, Gregory Jaczko, who left the commission in 2012, said he hopes Japan pours its energy into coming up with ways to function without atomic power.

"I think the Japanese people have the ability to do that," he said. (The Japan Times)
