Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike revealed Sept. 10 that the foundations of three main structures of the Toyosu market in Koto Ward that was built to replace the famed Tsukiji fish market were not filled with clean soil as the public was previously told.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reportedly placed 4.5 meters of clean and decontaminated soil on the site to ensure the safety of the new fish market, but Koike said there are actually empty spaces filled with pipes and cables below five structures on the site, including three main structures.
