Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Oct. 8 that the government is seeking the return of a portion of a large U.S. military training area in Okinawa Prefec-ture by the end of the year.
"(Japan) wants to negotiate with the United States to achieve the year-end return of the training area," Suga told the chiefs of the villages of Kunigami and Higashi in the prefecture.
The training area straddles the villages, and its return is viewed as a way to show Tokyo is com-mitted to easing Okinawa's base-hosting burden. (Kyodo)
