Work resumes on Futenma air base relocation

Government workers resumed offshore work Feb. 6 off the coast of Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, to build the replacement facility for U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma as protesters gathered to halt the project.

Some 100 protesters gathered from dawn in front of the gate of Camp Schwab next to a site for reclamation work to block the entry of construction vehicles.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to go ahead with the base relocation when they met in Tokyo on Feb. 3. (Kyodo)

政府は2月6日、沖縄県・宜野湾市の米海兵隊普天間飛行場の名護市辺野古沿岸部への移設に向け、埋め立て工事を再開した。移設反対派による抗議活動も見られた。
