The government on April 25 began building sea walls for a replacement facility for the U.S. Air Station Futenma in Okinawa Prefecture.
Workers have begun dumping building materials into the sea in Nago. The government plans to start landfill work inside the sea walls in the first half of 2018.
Defense Minister Tomomi Inada called the building of the sea wall “a steady first step toward realizing a complete return of the Futenma airfield.”
Many locals still oppose the base relocation. (Kyodo)
