1,200 see Xiang Xiang as viewing time eased

Around 1,200 people lined up before dawn on Feb. 1 at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo to see giant panda cub Xiang Xiang and mother Shin Shin, as a first-come, first-served system for viewing the animals kicked off.

The line began to form at around 3 a.m., the zoo said. Numbered tickets were distributed at 9:30 a.m. The display period is now 2-1/2 hours longer, running from 9:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with 9,500 daily visitors allowed.

"My friend lined up from 4:30 a.m," said 15-year-old Yutaka Shimizu. (Kyodo)
