Japan Sumo Association chairman Hakkaku has apologized over an incident in which women were asked to get out of the ring as they attempted to revive an official who collapsed.
In sumo, the ring is traditionally considered sacred and women are prohibited from entering.
On April 4, the mayor of Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, collapsed during a speech in the ring. Two women rushed to perform first aid on him. As two more women joined, a sumo referee began saying, "Ladies, please get off the ring." (Kyodo)
