Egypt unveiled Aug. 6 a major extension of the Suez Canal that President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has billed as a historic achievement needed to boost the country's ailing economy after years of unrest.
The new Suez Canal extension involved making a parallel waterway in the middle of the canal to facilitate two-way traffic.
The government says the project will double the canal's revenue, and pro-government media call it a historic achievement. However, economists have questioned its value. (Reuters)
