China starts operating biggest radio telescope

The world's largest radio telescope began searching for signals from stars and galaxies and, perhaps, extraterrestrial life Sept. 25 in a project demonstrating China's rising ambitions in space and its pursuit of international scientific prestige.

The radio telescope in Guizhou province took five years and $180 million (¥18.1 billion) to build, and its 500-meter-diameter surpasses the 300-meter Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

Beijing has poured billions into such ambitious scientific projects. (AP)
