British Prime Minister Theresa May called April 18 for a snap general election on June 8, saying she needed to toughen her hand ahead of talks to divorce the U.K. from the European Union.
May told reporters she had been reluctant to ask Parliament to back her move to bring forward the poll from 2020, but decided it was necessary to try to prevent opposition parties "jeopardizing" her work on Brexit.
Opinion polls put her Conservative Party around 20 percentage points ahead of the main opposition Labour Party. (Reuters)
