Shimane nuclear-free petition draws voters

Shimane Prefecture citizens pushing for a local ordinance to phase out nuclear power and develop renewable energy say they have collected more than 92,000 signatures, a number that would force the governor to introduce such an ordinance to the prefectural assembly.

Kenji Nanki, a spokesman for the group, said they will present the petition to Gov. Zenbei Mizoguchi in early February. (Kyodo)
