Takako Doi, a former House of Representatives speaker and former head of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), died of pneumonia Sept. 20, the SDP said the following day. She was 85.
Doi led an earlier version of the SDP from 1986 to 1991, and the SDP from 1996 to 2003. She was the first female leader of a major Japanese political party. Her straight-talking manner appealed to voters, especially women. (The Japan Times)
