35,000 gather to oppose Futenma relocation

Around 35,000 people gathered May 17 at a baseball stadium in Naha to oppose the transfer of a key U.S. military base within Okinawa Prefecture.

Organizers said the turnout was the highest since September 2012, when around 100,000 people protested the deployment of MV-22 Osprey aircraft at the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma Air Station in Ginowan.

"I will make all-out efforts ... never to allow a new military base to be built in the Henoko district" of Nago, Okinawa Gov. Takeshi Onaga told a cheering crowd. (Kyodo)

米軍普天間飛行場の名護市辺野古への移設阻止を訴える沖縄県民大会が那覇市の野球場で開かれ、約3万5千人が集まった。参加者の数は2012年9月以来、最多となった。
