Critics slam high court ruling on surnames

A Supreme Court ruling that upholds the law requiring spouses to use the same surname was criticized Dec. 16 by gender equality experts overseas.

The court ruled that the law was constitutional and "well established in society."

A CNN report on the ruling said many gender equality experts criticized the ruling, and a U.N. committee said the law was "discriminatory" and "outdated."

However, the court also ruled that a legal provision prohibiting women from remarrying for six months after a divorce was unconstitutional. (Kyodo)
