Launch of tiny satellite-carrying rocket aborted

Japan's ambitious move into the growing field of minisatellites met with a setback when JAXA on Jan. 15 called off a satellite launch from what would have been the world's smallest rocket capable of launching a satellite.

The rocket, just 10 meters long and 50 cm in diameter, developed a communications malfunction after lifting off from Uchinoura Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said.

The satellite launch was aborted, and the rocket and its satellite tumbled into the sea. (Kyodo)
