Kumamoto marks 1 year after deadly quakes

As the one-year anniversary of strong earthquakes in Kumamoto Prefecture was marked April 14, governments pledged to overcome the disaster and accelerate efforts at reconstruction.

The quakes killed 225 people, including 170 people in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures who died from indirect causes, according to authorities.

More than 47,000 people are still displaced.

A memorial service was held at the Kumamoto Prefectural Government office with families of the dead. (Kyodo)
