Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed July 3 to "win back the public's trust" after his Liberal Democratic Party was ousted as the largest force in the Tokyo metropolitan assembly and Gov. Yuriko Koike's new party and allies secured a majority.
The July 2 election, viewed as a barometer of national politics, followed a string of scandals enveloping Abe, Cabinet ministers and LDP lawmakers.
Talking to reporters the next morning, Abe said the LDP has to take criticism of the administration "seriously." (Kyodo)
