Kesennuma unloaded around 26 tons of katsuo in its first catch of the season June 16 in Miyagi Prefecture, bringing hustle and bustle back to a fishing port that was nearly wiped off the map by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Kesennuma has led Japan in catches of bonito for 17 years. This season’s first bonito were caught off Ibaraki Prefecture. The highest bid at the year’s first auction was yen500 per kg.
“The price is quite good,” a fishing industry representative said. (Kyodo)
