Tokyo Station marks 100 years since opening

A ceremony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Tokyo Station was held Dec. 19 at the iconic red-brick station building, with the president of East Japan Railway Co. hailing the station as a “symbol of Japan’s modernization.”

The station, which opened on Dec. 20, 1914, was ravaged by bombing in World War II but survived to serve as the foundation of Japan’s railway development.

“I hope Tokyo Station will re-main as the center of Japan’s development,” JR East President Tetsuro Tomita said. (Kyodo)
