Thai army starts work, with dissent still in air

Thailand's military rulers settled down at their Bangkok headquarters May 27, having obtained royal endorsement but facing small protests that so far they have handled with restraint.

Thai coup leader Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha said May 26 he was formally endorsed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej to head a military council in charge of the country. He warned he would use force if protests flared.

Prayuth moved to seize power May 22 after nearly seven months of sometimes deadly demonstrations. (Reuters)
