The United States and its Arab allies bombed militant groups in Syria for the first time Sept. 23, killing scores of Islamic State fighters and members of a sepa-rate al-Qaida-linked group, and opening a new front amid shifting Middle East alliances.
The attacks encountered no ob-jection from President Bashar Assad’s Syrian government, which said Washington had warned Damascus in advance.
Arab states that participated in or supported the strikes included Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan and Bahrain. (Reuters)
