Despite heavy pollution blanketing Beijing on Oct. 19, an international marathon went ahead with competitors using face masks and sponges to battle the toxic smog.
The 34th Beijing International Marathon began at Tiananmen Square with many of the tens of thousands of participants wearing face masks.
The U.S. Embassy, which measures air quality on its roof, said the atmosphere was hazardous.
Many buildings in the city couldn’t be seen through the gray-tinged mist. (AP)
