E-mail activities galore

By John Moore

Eメールの活用法

ホームページを見るのにインターネットを使っているが、電話で用が足りるのでEメールはいらないという人、いませんか?でも、メールは友達作りの最高の道具。そのほかにもさまざまな活用法があります。

Which do you use more: e-mail or the Web? They say e-mail is the ultimate "killer app," but the Web is so much more colorful and lively! My son Peter surfs the Web all the time, but he said he doesn't even want his own e-mail address yet.

What can you do with e-mail, after all? To talk to your friends, you can just call them up. On the other hand, e-mail might help you make more friends.

Yes, one of the best things about e-mail is when you have a penpal. To find one, try checking a few interesting-looking Web sites with easy-to-remember names, like Penpal Net (penpalnet.com), Penpal World (penpalworld.com) and Penpal Garden (penpalgarden.com). You generally have to sign in at these sites, but they're free. Then you can look for other people all around the world to correspond with.

This is a great way to improve your English writing, of course. You just have to be careful about what kind of person you choose for your penpal. A lot of people are really looking for love, instead of just friendship. But that's actually another powerful way to learn a foreign language! My sister-in-law met her husband online. It really does happen.

What else can you do? You can join an e-mail discussion group on a special topic you choose. That way, you'll get many interesting messages each day. I like "Nihongo Computing" (www.msdi.co.jp/public/mailing-lists/listinfo/nihongo-computing) and the Society of Writers, Translators and Editors (www.swet.jp/about/lists/).

You can find your own favorite e-mail lists by searching the Web. CataList, for example, has over 66,000 to choose from, at www.lsoft.com/catalist.html. I'm crazy about art these days, and CataList offers dozens of e-mail groups holding art discussions.

Then there are the free e-mail magazines. These are just for reading, so you can't participate in them, but they are still excellent resources. I get four or five computer magazines every month in my in-box.

And as usual, the Web gives you a huge treasure-trove of choices. Go to eZineSearch (www.homeincome.com/search-it/ezine/). This site provides a nicely organized index. After you click on a topic, you should wait a while to see the results, though, because their database is slow.

Other places to look include the Ezine Directory (www.ezine-dir.com), the Ezine Catalog (www.ezinecatalog.com) or even the Ezine Universe (ezine-universe.com).

Wow, there's so much you can do with e-mail! Peter, you don't know what you're missing.
