Mao fails triple axel, but wins Skate America

Mao Asada beat American Ashley Wagner on Oct. 20 at Skate America despite a fall in her free skate routine.

Mao, the 2010 Olympic silver medalist, led going into the free skate. She fell on her opening triple axel, but had an elevated technical difficulty, so eventually came away with the win.

She was the only skater to try a triple axel at the Detroit event.

"I'm not completely satisfied with my performance today," Mao said, through a translator. "This was a learning experience." (AP)
