Hakamada appears in public; appeal mulled

Looking perplexed but thrilled to find himself in the spotlight, Iwao Hakamada, formerly the world's longest-serving death-row inmate, made his first public appearance April 14 since being released from prison and hospitalized.

Hakamada, 78, attended an event held for him in Tokyo as the Tokyo High Court mulls an appeal to refuse him a retrial for the 1966 quadruple-murder case for which he was convicted.

He was freed in March after the Shizuoka District Court ordered a retrial. (The Japan Times)
