Prime Minister Shinzo Abe suggested April 20 that as he plans to issue a statement on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, he is not concerned about repeating key phrases from previous statements.
His statement will be carefully watched to see if it contains a "heartfelt apology" over Japan's "colonial rule and aggression" during and before World War II.
Abe said he will uphold the "basic way of thinking" of the statements of previous prime ministers, and so "we don't need to write them again." (Kyodo)
