Stage director Yukio Ninagawa, renowned worldwide for his interpretations of Greek tragedies and Shakespeare, died May 12 in Tokyo of multiple organ failure caused by pneumonia, theater sources said. He was 80.
The Saitama Prefecture native directed Romeo and Juliet in 1974 to critical acclaim, and was known for incorporating kabuki and other Asian cultural features into his productions. (Kyodo)
