The central government formally decided Dec. 21 to decommission the Monju prototype fast-breeder nuclear reactor in Fukui Prefecture, despite strong opposition by the governor.
The government estimates that decommissioning Monju will cost at least ¥375 billion. It plans to remove the spent nuclear fuel by 2022 and finish dismantling the facility in 2047.
Fukui Gov. Issei Nishikawa told reporters after a meeting earlier in the day with the central government that he still opposed scrapping the facility. (Kyodo)
